2011 New Jersey Shore Walk Now for Autism Speaks Recap

The sixth annual NJ Shore Walk took place on Saturday, October 1, 2011, on the Great Lawn, in Long Branch. With 4000 walkers, the Walk raised $314,000 – so far! Thanks to our Walk Chairs, Janice McGreevy, Beth Sarfaty and Amanda Laughlin for their leadership in helping to bring together a wonderful planning committee again this year. The NJ Shore Walk Planning Committee doesn’t just come together to support the Walk, they come together to support each other. It is a wonderful combination, and the reason for the success of this Walk.

Also, that day, 200 runners participated in the second annual NJ Shore 5K Run Before the Walk. Thanks to Alyssa Garnett, Run Chairperson for leading the Run committee and joining Autism Speaks NJ into our new world of 5k running events. The Run was also a great success and now that we know how to do it, we are going to do it big next year!

The NJ Shore Walk/Run takes place along the picturesque boardwalk that passes through Pier Village on the Ocean. The weather that day was warm and sunny, as were the expressions on the walkers faces. The Great Lawn, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, is a beautiful location which we are very happy to call our Walk home.

Thanks to our planning committee’s efforts, and with the help of our new publicity chair, Mike Ciavolino of the Shore Creative Group, we were able to reach many new walkers this year through donated media. Half of the teams that registered this year were new to the Walk! We had 85 new teams from local communities, as well as from around the state. Thanks also to our Radio Sponsor, 94.3 The Point and especially Matt Ryan for also helping to spread the word.

Thanks also to our corporate sponsors Barclays Capital, Rothstein Kass, Bioreference Laboratories, Xerox and Brilliant Environmental Services, LLC.

And last, but certainly not least, we were joined by over one hundred talented volunteers that helped to make the NJ Shore Walk safe and fun for everyone!
