2011 South Dakota Walk Now for Autism Speaks

On Saturday, June 11, 2011, over 700 participants gathered for the South Dakota Walk Now for Autism Speaks event.  Walkers were thrilled to have the clouds part and the sun shining for the first time in four years!  It was a beautiful day in Sioux Falls! Master of Ceremonies Ben Davis did a fantastic job of greeting walkers and serving as our emcee for the event! Augie students Rachael Hoogedoorn and Chase Kramer gave a beautiful acapella rendition of the National Anthem to officially begin the event.  We were thrilled to have Eustacia Cutler (Temple Grandin’s mother) join us on the 50 yard line of Augustana College’s Kirkeby-Over Stadium football field for opening ceremonies!  After sharing some thoughts, she officially and enthusiastically kicked off our Walk!  We were thrilled to have her!

Geoffrey of Toys”R”Us, the 501st Legion of Star Wars and other Sioux Falls area mascots greeted walkers through the balloon arch.  Everyone enjoyed the Sioux Falls Mariachi Band while making the loop of Kirkeby-Over Stadium at Augustana College.  To date over $40,000 has been raised which puts us well on our way to reaching our goal of $50,000 for Autism Speaks in South Dakota!

Special thanks to sponsors Augustana College (all of the great staff and volunteers), LifeVantage, Results Radio/Cumulus Media, Epic Multimedia and HydraulLift as well as all other in-kind donors!  We also appreciate the volunteer efforts from Kohl’s and Target as well as all other volunteers that worked to make our event such a success!  A huge thank you to Alpha Xi Delta in South Dakota for their tremendous fundraising efforts of nearly $10,000.00!  Congratulations to top teams Yankton River Rats, Team For Little T, Team BoBo, all 2011 Grand Club Members, Walk day volunteers and committee members – without your hard work, the South Dakota Walk would not be possible.  Huge thanks to Walk Chairpersons Jennifer Miller and Kris Stewart for all of their hard work!  You ladies are FANTASTIC!
