2011 Miami Walk Now for Autism Speaks

Over 20,000 walkers participated in the 11th Annual Miami Walk Now for Autism Speaks held on Sunday, February 27th at the JC Bermudez Park in Doral, Florida. The first Walk of 2011 was a great success raising nearly $685,000!

The Walk program started with Florida State Representative Michael Bileca, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Miami-Dade County Commissioners Carlos Gimenez and Jose “Pepe” Diaz, and City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez welcoming the crowd. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wright, co-founders of Autism Speaks, thanked the crowd and spoke of the importance of Autism Speaks.

The Miami walkers warmed up with the world’s largest Zumba class led by LA Fitness instructors and the Miami Heat dancers. Entertainment included our kids corner, sponsored by DHL, that had 20 different rides and healing horses, making the Walk a perfect family day event! The refreshments had a unique Latin Flavor starting with a fresh Cuban espresso accompanied by an amazing “guayaba pastelito or a “ tequeno”. From Spain you could taste tortillas de patata or a you could delight yourself with croissants and muffins. Our food corner represented over 20 countries.

Over 50 vendors got together at the resource fair providing guidance and resources for families in English and Spanish. More than 50 sponsors were featured throughout the park. In addition, the Walk was supported by 15 media sponsors in English and Spanish. Thank you to our special MC’s Antonio Mora, CBS4 anchor; Sandra Peebles, Health and Lifestyle reporter, Univision 23; and Orlando Leon, Super X 103.5 FM radio personality from Clear Channel.

The success of the Walk was in great part due to the Walk committee lead by Walk co-chairs Manny Gaunaurd and Ralph MacNamara, and corporate chair Albert Lopez. THANK YOU for all you do for our families!!
