2010 Rochester Walk Now for Autism Speaks

One of our top teams, Team Jackpot, was on hand to have Jack cut the Walk start ribbon, officially getting things underway.

On Saturday, October 9, 2010, a record-setting 3,500 people came together at Monroe Community College for the 8th Annual Rochester Walk Now for Autism Speaks.  Together, the 185 teams and individual walkers raised almost $165,000 for Autism Speaks, funding work in research, family services, advocacy and awareness.  Without each of our supporters, this would not have been possible, and for that, we thank you.

The dedicated volunteers that make up the Rochester Walk Committee are at the core of the successful accomplishments of the Walk.  We would like to thank our Walk Chair, Amy Johnson, as well as the many members of the committee who were willing to step into very important roles, attend monthly planning meetings, run around town to pick up essentials, ‘talk the walk’ to the community, and really made our Walk possible!

We owe a huge thank you to our sponsors and media partners: Time Warner Cable, Remington, Gifford, Williams & Collichio, Wegmans, Excellus, Bright Start Pediatric Services, Wilmorite Malls, Pictometry International, Broadstone Real Estate, Karpus Investments, Boylan, Brown, Code, Vigdor & Wilson, News 10 NBC, and our Walk Day emcee from Channel 13, Jennifer Johnson.

We were so proud to include in our Walk day festivities not only over 12 area autism service professionals in our resource fair, but also our top five teams: KJ Golf for Autism, Team Jackpot, Christopher’s Cause, Making Strides for Emma and Tony, and ERW.  And while the list is still growing from those joining on Walk day, we salute our 27 current Grand Club members that had already joined by Walk Day.

Walk Chair, Amy Johnson, and our Walk Day emcee, Jennifer Johnson (and her new addition) pumped up the crowd as they shared how important the committee was in helping to create such a wonderful day for all of our families.

The 8th Annual Rochester Walk Now for Autism Speaks experienced a beautiful, sunny New York Fall day in the mid-60s and jam-packed with fun and excitement for the entire family!  Entertainment and Opening Ceremonies included the musical stylings of The Dog House, our fabulous emcee for the day, Jennifer Johnson of WHAM 13 News, bounce houses for kids of all ages, a team t-shirt contest, a handprint banner, facepainting, a proclamation from the Mayor’s office  officially making the day ‘Autism Awareness Day’ in Rochester, several animal friends from the ZooMobile (armadillo, snake, spiders, and more), an autism-themed puppet show, a talking school bus, and 7 mascots from our local favorites, including Geoffrey the Giraffe from Toys”R”Us.

We have candid photos in from Walk day, as well as more news and updates about the Rochester Walk on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/autismspeaks.rochester.  (click “Like” to become a fan)
