2010 Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks

The ninth annual Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks was Saturday, June 19 at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines. Nearly 3200 walkers, teams, friends, families and community supporters joined together as one to walk for HOPE, raising over $161,000.

New this year was a Sensory Tent hosted by ChildServe and a Teen Tent hosted by Metro West Kids. Walk Chair, Danielle Sharpe, welcomed teams with a special recognition to our sponsors, Katecho, Hy-Vee, Casey’s General Store, Sharpe Family Dental, Long John Silvers, IMT Group, NCMIC, FBL Financial, WHO Channel 13, The Central Iowa Blues Society, Blanks Children Hospital, Mix 101.7 and KAYL, KKIA 92.9.  Danielle talked about the many successes Iowa had this year, including the passing of the Autism Insurance Bill and exciting new scientific research. A moment of “autism silence” was held in the passing of Team Captain Heather Campbell this last week.

 Angela Woods with Casey’s General Store, which participated in the National Puzzle Piece Campaign, thanked the crowd for their support and announced over 1500 stores raised $143,000 for Autism Speaks.

Megan Reuther from WHO Ch. 13 withPublicity Chairs Steve and Christina Johnson rallied the crowd, announcing our Top Teams and Top Fundraisers. The overall Top Fundraiser was Briana Franz with $6,050 and our Top Team was Metro West Kids with $8,775. Megan judged the Team T-shirt Contest and the winning team was Team John John!  Special recognition was given to our Grand Club Members for successfully raising  $1,000 or more!

Geoffrey from Toy’s R Us, and the Waukee High School Cheerleading Squad cut the Walk Ribbon and cheered each walker as they started the 2.5 mile walk.

Special thank you to Danielle Sharpe the 2010 Walk Chair and all of the Walk Committee volunteers, Walk Day Volunteers and the thousands of walkers and supporters that came out and supported the Iowa Autism Community.
