2010 Cincinnati Walk Now for Autism Speaks

On Saturday, May 22, over 8,000 people came together for the 3rd Annual Cincinnati Walk Now for Autism Speaks in solidarity, community and hope.  This is more than we could have imagined, as last year we hosted 5,000 walkers. We enjoyed perfect weather and a spectacular day of festivities, with donated refreshments, team pictures and children’s entertainment. We created family memories that will last a lifetime as we proudly wore our team t-shirts, displayed our banners, and showed the Ohio and Kentucky areas how strong we are as a community!

Our Cincinnati Walk Committee, led by the fearless 2010 Walk Co-Chairs John Manos and Kristi Howell, worked tirelessly to make the Walk such an incredible experience for everyone! We can’t thank our all-volunteer Committee enough for the work they do throughout the year on behalf of Autism Speaks. Our Committee makes presentations to educate schools and community organizations about autism, secures food and beverage donations, calls team captains to keep everyone informed about the Walk’s progress, plans the Kick-Off luncheon and Walk Day activities, plans year-round awareness and community events around town, and so much more! Please join me in thanking the Walk Committee for all that they do for us in Ohio and Kentucky!

Many thanks to our special guests and entertainers, Miss Joanie, the Q102 crew and the Jeff and Jenn morning show, Leslie Howell, a 9 year old diagnosed with autism who beautifully sang ‘The Climb’, Twister and players from the Cyclones, Mr. Redlegs from the Cincinnati Reds, a robot from Lazer Kraze, the drumline from Anderson High School marching band, several characters from the Star Wars movies, the Oak Hills football platers, and a reading of the proclamation of May 22, 2010 being ‘Autism Awareness Day’ in the city of Cincinnati.  All in addition to Geoffrey the Giraffe and everyone from Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us.

Over 20 local service providers participated in the resource fair, and we also have to give a shout out to our corporate and media partners, including Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, J.T.M Food Group, Keating, Muething and Klekamp, Family Tree Chiropractic and Wellness, Morgan Keegan and Co., The Brickman Group, Minute Rice, and Ad2 Cincinnati, Q102 WKRQ and WLWT-TV Channel 5.

The Walk is so excited to announce that we hosted over 27 grand club members at the Walk (and still growing!), as well as over 400 teams.  And a special thank you to our newest company team (and largest, at 200 members under 19 sub-teams), DHL, championed and steered by Paul White, who presented a check to the Cincinnati Walk for $40,000, a combined total from team fundraising, a national company match, and a regional area match.
