2010 Broward Walk Now for Autism Speaks

Walk Chair Dianne Orr, Jaclyn Merens, S. FL Regional Dr. and Walk Chair Rachael Baldassarra

All the hard work of Walk Chairs Dianne Orr and Rachael Baldassarra along with Honorary Chair, The Honorable Robin Bartleman, Broward School Board Member, paid off !  The 10th Annual Broward Walk Now for Autism Speaks started off with an amazing crew of volunteers setting up the event in the rain.   Thank you Broward County! The rain stopped just as the first walkers arrived and the sun shined on the over 300 teams as 10,000 walkers came out to enjoy a morning of food, fun and entertainment!  There were over 50 Resource Fair Providers and Sponsors including Toys “R” Us, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network – The Striano Financial Group, Our Child Safe, Pizza Fusion and NSU were a part of our Resource Village.  More than $320,000 has been raised so far with more on its way!

Families were entertained by Deejay Gary Gore, the puppet show Swim With Mr. Blue, The Exceptional Theater Company and the rap group Groundhogs.  A beautiful rendition of the National Anthem was sung by Jonathan Richard, a young man with ASD.  Special thanks to Emcee, Jen Herrera, News Anchor for WPLG and to Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl for declaring April 17th Autism Speaks Day.  Our heartfelt appreciation to Tunies, Sysco, Ben and Jerry’s in Aventura, and for serving up delicious and (mostly!) nutritious treats.

Congratulations to our Top Team, the Parkland Powerhouse Team for raising $32,445 as well as to Team NSU for coming in second and recruiting 358 walkers and to our Top Family Team, the Big Dog Walkers. A huge thank you to all our teams, walkers, and volunteers as well as our incredibly gracious friends at Nova Southeastern University for making the Tenth Annual Broward Walk our best event yet.
