On a glorious September day, with a view of the Rocky Mountains in the background, 3,000 participants ran and walked at historic Nat Bailey Stadium, home of the Vancouver Canadian’s AAA baseball team, in Vancouver, British Columbia, site of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Bruce McLaren, president of Home Restaurants, presented a cheque for $13,000 with a pledge of “more to come” to event Co-Chairs Claire and Dimitri Apostolopoulos and John Carinha. Bruce, the grandfather of Carter McLaren, who has autism, engaged his staff and the patrons of the five Home Restaurant locations in BC to “buy a burger” in the month of September with a $1 donation going towards the Walk/Run.

The crowd was inspired by special needs performers from Aer-Elite Dance Group and irota’s Alchymy Martial Arts Centre, who demonstrated the benefits and fun of participation without barriers. A surprise visit from Quatchi, Miga and Sumi, the mascots for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, thrilled the walkers. Seventeen local service providers showcased their programs at the resource fair – led by Canucks Autism Network and Monarch House who supported the event with a special soccer skills area and mega-slide that was enjoyed by all. The second annual BC Walk/Run Now for Autism Speaks has raised nearly $241,000.
