Dear Mr. President:
I hope you and your family had a wonderful visit to South America. Did you have the opportunity to visit the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro? Did you know that this statue along with over 500 buildings and communities worldwide will be shining with blue lights on April 1 & 2 in honor of the United Nations’ World Autism Awareness Day? I am more than a little disappointed that your home, OUR White House has not agreed to join the Autism Speaks Light It Up Blue Campaign. I have read many inspiring letters that have been sent to you in the past few weeks asking for your help. As a grandmother of 13-year-old twin boys who both have autism, I am asking you to join this campaign and light the White House blue on April 1 and 2.
One of my grandsons finished his treatment for leukemia in May of last year and is now a cancer survivor! We are so grateful to the dedicated researchers and fundraisers who helped find a cure for his type of cancer. It was money well spent. Unfortunately, there is no cure for autism. Now is the time to put more money, energy, and research into changing this. My grandsons and the millions of people worldwide who are affected by this condition deserve help. Raising awareness is the first step towards understanding and acceptance. I’ll be putting a blue bulb at my front door to join in this world-wide movement to shine a light on the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. I hope you will do the same.
Nancy Miltenberger
